About Coccolithophores

Coccolithophores are microalgae (one of the primary algal groups) and a major component of oceanic microplankton. Coccolithophores have coccoliths – calcareous scales that shield them, at least in one stage of their life cycle and account for their massive presence in the microfossil record. Coccolithophores belong to the division Haptophyta and to the class Prymnesiophyceae.
